Visit to the Martin Auto Museum

It's about time that I sat down to scribe a decent blog to all my loyal followers, it has been quite some time since I have written an informative article on my travels since returning from my 3-month extravaganza in Great Britain last year.

Today is one of those days that I can sit here & tell you all about my visit this week, to the Mel Martin Auto Museum here in Glendale, in Phoenix just a quick hop, skip & a jump from the San Tan Mobile Village here in Chandler, where I live.

Today’s tour was brought about by my Model A Ford Restorers Club of Arizona of which I have been a member for 13-years.

It is really great to have a story that I can get my teeth into once again instead of telling you boring old stuff like working on my vehicles for the past 3-weeks preparing them for sale.

Instead of getting grease under my fingernails, skinned & bleeding knuckles. I decided that today was a leisure day, down with the tools off with the overalls & on with the my smart casual clothes that you are all aware of to enjoy a day with twenty of my colleagues from the Arizona Model A Car Club.

Established in 2008, the Martin Auto Museum is the brainchild of owner & founder Mel Martin, an Iowa-born real estate developer, (see photo of Mel & myself). Mel’s passion is sharing his collection that represents significant periods of time in automotive history.

The Museum features more than 170 vehicles, including classic cars, hot rods, customs, imports, & much more. It also has one of the largest collections of auto memorabilia, antique gas pumps, & signage anywhere in the world.

Mel’s goal is to protect & preserve their fine automobiles & collectibles for the enjoyment & education of future generations as is our similar goal with our Sylvanvale Pre-WWll Vintage Car show every year in the Sutherland Shire in Australia.

A trip to the Martin Auto Museum wouldn’t be complete without taking some photos of their vehicles.

Yes, I did just that & was very fortunate to meet the man himself & he was kind enough to spend some time with me to tell me all about the Museum, how he made his fortune & he is a complete petrol head just like the rest of us, only with a lot more of that folding stuff.

Mel is 92-years old, (see photo above) and he's still as sharp as a razor blade. He made his fortune out of Real Estate, as you do. The Museum recently relocated to an old Supermarket building that works sensationally for a Auto Museum and Event Center.

Mel’s 1965 Shelby AC Cobra if you can believe it, which I do, has the sum total of 6 original miles or 9.6 kms on the clock, the dash is personally autographed (see photo) by none other than the legendary automotive designer and entrepreneur, Carroll Shelby himself. Can you just imagine how much this highly collectable and rare gem would be worth? this vehicle would be priceless.

Mel also told me the story behind his 1917 Douglas Dump Truck (see photo below) he was very amused when I told him that we call these trucks in Australia Tipper Trucks.

This Dump Truck was his first vehicle that Mel purchased when he was a hairy arsed kid at 16-years old. The Douglas was a fully workable workhorse when he was a youth, check out the solid rubber tyres. The truck was used in mining Onyx in Arizona.

You know what, I have to try & keep this email short, or else it is going to end up like War & Peace & I sure a hell do not want you to get bored with my ramblings.

There are a couple of other vehicles that I would like to tell you about, however I will start off with the 1930 Duesenberg, Model J Torpedo, Convertible Boat-Tailed Speedster (see photo below). This is one magnificent motor vehicle. 

Back in the ‘30s the Doozy's, as they were nicknamed, were the preferred choice of wheels chosen by all the movie stars in Hollywood & I sure can see why. If you want to make an impression on someone this is definitely the vehicle to do just that.

This next vehicle really tickled my fancy, I wonder if you can work out why! Check out the 1951 Ford Country “Squire” Wagon.

As you can see I have only talked about four motor vehicles in this report, there are another 170 classics on display in this truly sensational Martin Auto Museum, if you are still interested you can always Google martinautomuseum.com & browse through their site, well worth the effort. I am sure that you will find vehicles that turn you on, unfortunately I don’t have the space to cover everything in my blog.

I have been a member for 13-years.

Tomorrow it looks like I am back on the tools again, there is no rest for the wicked you know. My RV has top priority this week, I am waiting on a gear shift cable that I am having made in Virginia, it won’t arrive here in Arizona until Tuesday or Wednesday this week. 

Until then I really can’t drive it because I cannot select the gears & when you can’t select the transmission into forward or reverse the big V-10 Chevy engine ain’t going anywhere. Once I have the RV mobile l can then drive the old girl to have the emission's test done & then re-register the sucker.

Here in Arizona, testing is required in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas, where ozone and particulate matter pollution are a problem. You cannot sell a vehicle unless it has passed the emission's test.

Then next week l will be able to display the RV out the front of the San Tan Mobile Village overlooking the very busy Gilbert Road then hopefully jag some passer-byer to purchase my 33ft RV. Please keep your fingers crossed for the 'Squire' from the Shire to sell my RV that I have criss-crossed America in over the past 12-years.

Build-up to getting my RV ready for sale

Sunday 8th January - 2023

I hope everyone is having a great start to 2023.

I am bright eyed & bushy tailed this morning because I managed to fire up the RV yesterday without too much drama, if you can believe it!

This was the job that l was fearing the most and it turned out to be the easiest. I had much more trouble with my Model A Ford, 'Sheila' & the Toyota Echo getting them to start than I did with the RV. Thank heavens.

I even slept in yesterday fearing the worst of what lay ahead of me, as I was not game enough to even start with lifting the bonnet. Turns out after a period of 3.5 years the old girl started up with some tender loving care from the old motor mechanic from Down-Under.

I tried all my years of experience & tricks & guess what, the BIG V-10 engine is purring like a kitten.

My RV that you see in the photos is 33ft or 10 mts in length with a huge V-10 engine, chewing up more than 10-miles to the gallon of petrol. In the past I have enjoyed many wonderful road trips driving all over the United States in it, east to west & north to south. Now it is too expensive for a battler like myself to drive all around America like I used to do.

My RV has served me well over the years,

but now it's time to clean it up and sell it.

I tow my stick shift 2000 Toyota Echo sedan behind the RV camper, with the mighty V-10 powering the RV on the open road, you wouldn’t even know that the car is being towed behind you.

The last big road trip I did was to drive over to Florida in May, 2019 to see where Henry Ford & his close mate, inventor, Thomas Edison used to spend their summer vacations in Florida. I actually wrote a blog about that trip a few years ago, maybe you read it? (Click here to read it)

My next job is to get the RV pollution tested & re-registered & it will be ready for sale. You can’t sell a vehicle here in Arizona if it does not have a current, valid pollution certificate. Right now it is 7:00 am, the sun does not rise until around 07:20am so I will have my brekko & hit the tools again today.

It will be such a load off my mind when I clear myself of all this baggage up here that l have accumulated over the years plus not to mention the cost.

I can’t believe how expensive the cost of living has become here in America, inflation is rampant, it used to be cheap to come to the States & enjoy a magnificent holiday, you used to get value for your money, now it is completely over the top.

Believe it or not we are so much better off in Australia than these poor people here in America & in England & we have the good weather to go with it. Trust me count your blessings that we live in the lucky country.

It is just starting to come light outside & looks like it will be another nice day, we have had a couple of rainy days which is very unusual for Phoenix.

Time for my brekko with fresh, free-range farm eggs, they are sensational straight from the meandering chooks here on the property at the San Tan Village, they are still warm if you can believe it.

Need to finish off now & hit the road running.

'Sheila' now US roadworthy

Tuesday 3rd January - 2023

After two weeks of being here in Chandler, Phoenix, Arizona, I have finally got my my Model A Ford, 'Sheila' ready in preparation for local registration.

At 5:00pm this afternoon Sammy & myself were putting the finishing touches together at the local motor registry to register both my Toyota Echo and 'Sheila' for legal use on US roads.

When I insured 'Sheila' yesterday with the State Farm Insurance Company they required photographs of the old girl for their records & also the all important VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) that is stamped on the LHS chassis rail.

Today, I gave her a quick wash & took some photographs to forward onto the Insurance Company as they requested. Without that Number the authorities will not allow any vehicle to depart America.

After all my mechanical work to get her up and running smoothly, I can’t wait until I have 'Sheila' professionally detailed on the 6th January, she should come up brilliantly.

Then it will be ready for some grand touring. My friend, Steve Core will be arriving here from Australia in Phoenix on the 1st of February for a 3-week stay, and we are planning a few adventurous road trips in the old girl. 

In addition, the old Toyota Echo will also have a lick & a promise on the 5th January, then I will put her out the front of San Tan Mobile Village & see what eventuates, hopefully I shouldn’t have too much trouble selling it.

Tomorrow, I will start working on my V-10 Chevy engine Mobile Home, I really have not been looking forward to that challenge. I already have a bloke interested in it with the condition that the engine is running, plus it passes the pollution test & finally re-registered for road worthiness. Wish me luck, I will need it.

I am so fortunate that I have the resident Guthrie family here at the park, Sammy (junior) allows me to use all his tools, if l need any parts he usually has them in stock, not only that Sammy’s dad (Sam senior) drives me where ever I need to venture in Chandler in his 1931 Model A Ford pick up, we have an absolute ball.

You should see the pair of us 75-year old’s running around town we look like we are on the set of the Beverly Hillbillies, only we are having a much better time.

That has been my home here in Chandler, Arizona for the past 13-years. When I venture over here for my 90-day vacation, it's been my home away from home.

Getting 'Sheila' roadworthy in Arizona

Sunday 1st January - 2023

Hello everybody from Phoenix, Arizona. Happy New Year to one and all.

Now that the festive season is behind us, it is now the right time to put the overalls on and open my tool box to prepare my 1931 Model A Ford slant window Town Sedan for the many drives through the desert here in Arizona.

My Model A Ford needs a little tender loving care after laying idle for 3.5 years here in the harsh desert conditions of Arizona, admittedly 'Sheila' has been under cover all that time. I would hate to think what condition it would be in if I had left it out in the elements all that time as I have done with my Mobile Home. (That’s another story to come).

My baby needs new tyres, a new battery, new fuel pump, grease & oil change plus an oil filter & a bloody good detail to bring it back to all her beauty.

Tomorrow, I am having five new Radial Ply tyres fitted to my 16” Kelsey rims, the old tyres are well & truly past their use by date & I sure as hell do not want to have a blow out driving through the desert on my way to Las Vegas, because it gets very lonely out there in the desert when you are a long way from the nearest town in the middle of nowhere.

I purchased 'Sheila' 13-years ago & have driven it all over America during that time, touch wood she has never let me down once, even when I drove her through Death Valley in California in temperatures of 120F or 49C on my way to a Model A Ford National Rally in Lake Tahoe 4-years ago.

All of my American friends said that I was an absolute idiot to have done what I did back then & thinking back on that experience I probably was. However as you all know the 'Squire' always pushes the limits.

All of my other Model A Ford friends over here always trailer their vehicles to & from the National Rallies, but not Warbo. None of my cars here or in Australia are trailer Queens, & that’s the way l like it.

Believe you me I have so much fun driving 'Sheila' all around America, there is nothing better than driving my 91-year old, Henry Ford Classic on a road trip, it opens so many doors for me without me actually saying one word.

I can’t wait to hit the highway again once she is up to my very high safety standards. I need to make sure it won’t let me down because I do not want you reading bad news about the “ Squire” in the Sydney Morning Herald, if you get my drift because I still have some Superannuation to spend.

Tough as nails, just look at the size of his left hand. He is from the old school & I simply love him to death. We have a ball together, let me tell you I want him on my side in a dark alley.

The Winter weather at the moment here in the Southern States, especially here in Phoenix Arizona is absolutely perfect, very cold during the evenings & early mornings, once the sun rises above the yardarm about 9:00am it is a different world. The last couple of days here in Arizona have been nothing short of sensational 22C or 72F while up in the Northern States they have experienced atrocious weather conditions as I am sure you all know listening to the news reports.

Finally, do you like my bumper sticker on the rear window of 'Sheila'? It reads: ‘I Love Pot Holes’ Chicken, Alaska.

This bumper sticker would not be appreciated in NSW, Australia right now due to the horrendous road conditions after all the bad weather we have experienced over the past 6-months.

Winter & Xmas in Arizona

Greetings from the San Tan RV Trailer Village here in Chandler, Phoenix, Arizona. I arrived here 4-days ago for a 3-month stay. My Qantas B787 Dreamliner delivered me safely across the Pacific from Sydney to Los Angeles last Friday.

Here's a quick update on what is happening since my arrival here in Chandler.

Firstly, it's Winter here in America and I can’t believe how cold it is here in the desert. Normally, the Sonoran Desert provides ample Winter subtropical warmth, but at present it is 2°C (32°F), I have the furnace cranked up in the trailer to 26°C (80°F).

Right now it is 6:30am, it is still pitch dark out side, glad l am not a homeless dude here at the moment otherwise you would freeze to death.

I am having a terrible time with my sleep pattern this time around, first night I slept for 12-hours straight, the following night I did not sleep a wink, so last night I decided to pop half a sleeping pill & ended up with about 6-hours looking at the insides of my eyes, still feel like shit.

I decided to set up my communications with my mobile phone & internet connections. Well that is another story.

Can you believe this, my brand new Apple iPhone 14 is useless here in America, Verizon or AT&T won’t accept my new Aussie Apple phone, apparently it can not be linked up to their cellular system. My choices were; either purchase a new phone for $400 or purchase a pay as you go phone from Walmart for $25.

My local mate, Sammy has recently just bought a new Apple phone & said that I could use his old Apple 6 while I am here which was very good of him, so I now have a phone & a local telephone number. What a hassle I had all day yesterday getting all that organised.

Not only that I decided to get my iPad connected so that I can send emails instead of using Sammy’s email connection, which makes it more convenient for me instead of going over to his office on the property all the time when I want to read my emails or to forward emails, just makes it a whole lot more easier for me so that I am not always looking for an email address where ever I am.

However to do that they also wanted my Social Security number, of which I do not have. Anyway to cut a long story short, because Sammy has lent me his old phone somehow we managed to bypass that regulation, so now I have a mobile phone to use here & also an iPad that I can use 24/7 no matter where I am.

Apart from that I have also been trying to start my fleet of cars & get them prepared for rego & insurance some time this week. There is plenty to do, so I am not letting the grass grow under my feet.

After 3.5 years in parked storage, my RV has two blown tyres, so today I need to contact a tyre company that will come on site to remove and replace the tyres, I can’t move it while I have those two blow outs.

That will be my priority today, plus I need to buy new batteries for everything, they are all unserviceable because of lack of use for 3 1/2 years. As usual with car problems, it's nothing that money can’t fix.

My journey South in the Porsche

Thursday 24th November - 2022

It's great to be back out on the sensational open Aussie roads once again. This time, I am away with the Cronulla RSL's Motoring Enthusiasts (MEG) Car Group for 5-day road trip.

Looking forward to the next few days because they are a nice bunch of people. I have never ventured away with this group previously. If you can believe it, there are another four Porsches in our group, five including my 1977 Porsche 911, 2.7 Coupe.

We departed Sydney yesterday, I joined 30 fellow members & their cars, and we drove south to Mt.Ousley, where we stopped for morning tea & then pressed on inland to Goulburn via the scenic and narrow Macquarie Pass snaking through the Illawarra Escarpment.

In Goulburn we had lunch at the Tattersalls Hotel right opposite the Hibernian Hotel where we dined recently on the National Model A Rally in September.

While l was in Goulburn, l visited Darren at the NRMA workshop to say hello, then out to say hello to Christy at the South Goulburn Caravan Park, they both welcomed me with open arms.

I couldn’t help myself, whilst in Goulburn, I had to call into our favourite Trappers Bakery (located near the Big Ram) to purchase the foremost vanilla slice in the world to enjoy with my afternoon tea when l arrived here at the Motel later in the arvo.

Dinner this evening at the Queanbeyan Leagues Club, then back to the motel to retire for the night. Today, we are off on a scenic 126km drive to the beautiful Tidbinbilla Valley with brief stops at the Mt. Stromboli Observatory, Cotter Dam, the Canberra Deep Space Research Centre then onto lunch at Clarries, a vintage coffee shop located inside the 95-year-old Tharwa Country store in the small, but historic village of Tharwa which boasts the best (and only) pies in Tharwa.

Return to Queanbeyan via the Royalla Solar Farm and its 83,000 solar panels on Old Cooma Road. Dinner tonight at the Royal Hotel Queanbeyan.

The Spring weather is nice, not too cool so far. The frolic continues on Friday morning when we will depart Queanbeyan for our drive to Cooma, the gateway to the Snowy Mountains region. Temps will get a bit cooler as we climb up into the snow capped peaks of the alpine country.

The Porsche is running like a well oiled F1 machine, and it's turning heads where ever l go. It is now 6:00am as I type this, and time for a bacon & egg roll and then the road awaits us for today's rolling adventures.

2022 Chrysler Restorers Club of Australia’s National Rally

Friday 6th October - 2022

Towards the end of last week, I returned to Sydney late on Thursday afternoon so that I could attend Sylvanvale’s 75th Anniversary Reception at Government House that meant I had to cut short my days at the Chrysler Restorers Club of Australia’s National Rally being held in beautiful Wangaratta, Victoria.

For 12-months people have been telling me that the weather in Wangaratta is always cold no matter what time of year you visit this picturesque north-east Victorian town. How wrong that warning was.

It was clear that this year's Rally would have a strong Ned Kelly theme. Ned Kelly for those of you who do not know was Australia’s most famous or infamous Bush Ranger. Ned lived and earned his reputation in this district in the mid to late 1800s.

Steve Core, my traveling companion/navigator & myself departed Sydney early on Monday morning 3:00am (26th September) fully booted & spurred with all our winter woollies for the 7-hour road trip to Wangaratta in my 1964, Plymouth, left-hand drive, 2-door (three on-the-tree manual) special sedan.

We arrived at our Big4 North Cedars, Holiday Park on the outskirts of Wangaratta at 10:30am after a very pleasant & uneventful journey from the Sutherland Shire. Admittedly it was overcast when we arrived, however it was far from bitterly cold as l had been warned for the past year, which was great news.

Once we checked into our accommodation it was now time to start enjoying the action that the organising committee from the host Victorian Club Members had organised for all participants enjoyment.

Day 1 - Monday 26th September 2022.

A country drive south to visit the Swanpool Cinema.

Swanpool is a small rural community located on the Midland Highway between Benalla and Mansfield. Light rain tumbled down on arrival and we parked adjacent the Cinema, in a muddy car park filled with Chrysler vehicles. An impressive sight for tiny, little Swanpool. With many passing motorists stopping to take photos.

The Swanpool Cinema is a traditional and well-maintained 1950’s picture theatre run by an enthusiastic group of local volunteers. We enjoyed lunch and some automotive themed background films on arrival. That was followed by a number of short feature films in black & white selected for our viewing pleasure.

Then later in the afternoon at 6:00pm most participants meet up at Rally HQ for our evening meal in Ned’s Hideout (Wangaratta Racecourse) where l had the opportunity to catch up with many old friends & acquaintances from previous National Rallys.

With our early start, Monday had been a huge day for middle-aged men like us, so we hit the sack around 10:00pm to catch up with our beauty sleep and prepare ourselves for the following days adventures.

Day 2 - Tuesday 27th September 2022.

Drive to Yarrawonga on the banks of the Murray River for a Paddle Steamer ride and visit to local private museums.

The 80 Kms or 50 miles drive to Yarrawonga, on the Murray River, which is Australia’s longest river was very enjoyable. Once we arrived at Lake Mulwala we then boarded the Cumberoona Paddle Steamer that is no longer a paddle steamer because it is now diesel powered for a delightful 1-hour cruise around the lake in overcast, but calm weather.

After the cruise around Lake Mulwala it was now time to visit a couple of private museum collections in the area.

First cab off the rank was to visit the Graeme Ford collection, Graeme's a local collector who has organised his collection of tractors, cars and memorabilia in a large shed on his property the collection is well organised and presented, and includes household domestic goods of years gone by.

After Graeme’s farm we then moved onto Frank Keenan’s collection.

Frank is another enthusiastic, local identity intent on preserving history and has set out about collecting, cars trucks, tractors and farming equipment that was in use before he was born. It is a ramshackle collection with many unexpected gems that would excite many scrap metal merchants.

We returned to Wangaratta later in the afternoon, we took a side trip through the picturesque wine region of Rutherglen as glorious afternoon sunshine illuminated the bright yellow fields of Canola on surrounding properties.

We returned to Rally HQ at 6:00pm for dinner at Ned’s Hideout followed by a round of all-in Bingo for the punters then off to look at the inside of my eye lids for R&R for Wednesday’s adventure.

Day 3 - Wednesday 28th September 2022.

When I originally booked the Coach Tour to Shepparton many months ago to visit the Museum of Motoring Evolution (MOVE), Steve had not been included in the rally so unfortunately he missed out as the Coach was chockers with 55-people on board.

If you are passing through Shepparton, do not miss this magnificent dynamic, ever changing collection of vehicles on display, with machines from every era, and every corner of the globe. As well as Loel Thomson Costume Collection, Clayton Gramophones, telephones and radio Collection.

What we decided to do, l would still go to Shepparton for the day and l would lend the ‘64 Plymouth to Steve for him to please himself to go on his own adventure’s.

He choose to visit - Glenrowan. Steve mentioned to me later that evening that he did not actually visit the Kelly Museum itself. However he really enjoyed just walking around the picturesque town of Glenrowan taking photos & talking to the locals, he also highly recommends if you have the time to visit Glenrowan it is definitely worth the effort.

Wednesday evening was our last night in Wangaratta because Steve had to get back to Sydney to start work on Thursday evening and I also needed to be back in Sydney to attend my evening with Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beasley, AC, QC, Governor of NSW at Government House to celebrate the 75th Anniversary Reception for Sylvanvale.

It was very unfortunate that we could not complete the whole Rally, because you cannot be in two places at once.

Reports l have received from one of my fellow Chrysler tragic friends is that the weather God’s were with them for the rest of the Rally including the highly anticipated display day on Saturday morning. l have seen photographs from the display day and they are sensational, because the weather was perfect with plenty of sunshine.

Final event for this year's 16th National Chrysler Rally in Wangaratta was the Presentation Dinner, finished off a very successful event enjoyed by all those that were fortunate enough to attend.

If you are unaware of where the 17th National Chrysler Rally will be held in 2025, l have hot news straight off the press... it will be in Griffith, NSW. God willing, we all hope to be still around to see each other for another outstanding Rally in 2025.

Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Sylvanvale (1947-2012).

l am so proud to be the son of Norma & Alan Warburton and the brother of Carol Warburton.

My parents way back in 1947, (75-years ago) had the fortitude & insight along with four other families in the Sutherland Shire to be the foundation members of the Handicapped Children’s Centre of New South Wales. (now called Sylvanvale).

From those early humble beginnings in the Baptist Church at Flora Street in Sutherland, the church allowed a group of ladies who had a child with a disability, including my mum, to meet in the church hall. It started off like a playgroup & support group for the parents & children.

Sylvanvale wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the tireless work it’s founding families contributed all those 75-years ago.

Today, we support over 750 children & adults through out Sydney & the Blue Mountains with more than 20 group homes to support people (that are less fortunate than you & I) with disabilities to reach their potential.

What I am getting at is this; If it wasn’t for all that came before us, I wouldn’t have received this wonderful invitation to attend the 75th Anniversary Reception at Government House last night.

I feel so privileged to have been in the company of our very own Governor of New South Wales, Margaret Beasley, AC, QC to share this magnificent achievement & milestone in the history of Sylvanvale that my parents were the foundation members 75-years ago.

If the founding Mum’s & Dad’s could only see what the Handicapped Children’s Centre has evolved into, they would be delighted.

To come from those humble beginnings 75 years ago where they could not rub two copper coins together to now witness this multi million dollar organisation is mind boggling.

My dad passed away in June 2007, my mum passed away in April 2012 & my darling sister passed away in October 2020 (aged 75) however my parent's legacy still lives on.

My sister was one of the first children to attend the Handicapped Children’s Centre of New South Wales (now called the Sylvanvale).

My Dad in his words of wisdom would always say to me, “Don’t ever think that you cannot make a difference in this world, son”. My Mum & Dad devoted their whole life to the cause & I know they did make a difference.
